Many families have members with functional needs. Persons with functional needs may need assistance with everday activities such as transportation, feeding or personal care. It is essential to be pro-active in considering the unique needs faced by these members of your family and how you will meet them during and after a disaster.
Emergency Contact
Agree on a way for you or another family member to reach out and check on those who require additional care. Decide who will serve as the contact and make sure your family member can reach you as well to check-in.
Medications & Medical Records
Most shelters are not equipped to handle special medical needs. It is essential that you plan for access to medication and medical records in case of an evacuation.
Continuity of Care
If a family member is receiving on-going routine medical procedures or has in-home health care, ask your provider about how your family member can continue care during and after a disaster.
Functional Needs Registry
Many communities have a registry for those with functional needs that can be accessed by first responders during a disaster. Look for information about a registry through your local Public Health Department and register your family member so emergency personnel can understand their unique needs.
