Prepare for Pets

In many households, pets are an important part of the family. Make sure that you are prepared to care for your pets during a disaster by following these simple steps:

Pet Emergency Supplies
Include emergency supplies for your pet in your family disaster kit or create a separate pet emergency supply kit. You should include food, water, toys, medication, and any other items you need to care for your pet.

Medical Records
Don't forget to include copies of your pet's veterinary records in your disaster supply kit along with other vital documents.

Collar and ID
Make sure your pet wears a collar with ID and rabies vaccination tag at all times. You may not be home when a disaster occurs and your pet may flee the area. Another way to protect your pet is through an identification microchip which contains a bar code with your address and contact information in case your pet is turned in to a shelter.

Photo of You & Your Pet
Keep a photo of you and your pet together in your family disaster supply kit. In case you become separated, a photo can provide proof of ownership and help others identify your pet.

Out of Area Emergency "Home"
Select a friend or relative who lives in the region, but out of your immediate area who can care for your pet if you have to evacuate. Many times shelters will not allow pets, so it is important for you to make your own arrangements ahead of time.

Pet First Aid
Animal first aid classes are offered throughout the community. These classes provide basic information on how to provide first aid and basic medical care to an injured pet. For more information see
Training & Education.
