How Will Your Family Connect?
During a disaster or emergency your family may not be together. Children might be at school or daycare and parents at work or running errands. It's important to discuss how you will reach each other.
Make a plan with your family about how you will contact each other after a disaster, where you should go to meet up, and where you will go if you must evacuate your home. It's important to select an out-of-state contact in case local phone lines are clogged. Text messages can often be sent and received even when phone lines are busy and are another good alternative.
Learn about the emergency plans at your office and at your children's school or daycare. Understanding these plans can make your own plans more effective and increase the likelihood of survival.
ICE
Identify your immediate emergency contacts and program them into your cell phone. Label them "ICE" which stands for In Case of Emergency. After an accident or emergency, response personnel frequently check cell phones to try and reach family members.
