Learn About the Risks
Although Wisconsin does not have hurricanes or earthquakes, there are significant risks that could disrupt daily life and economic well-being. Below you will find a list of possible emergencies to consider as a resident of Wisconsin:
Severe Storm/Tornado
Wisconsin averages 21 tornadoes per year. Severe storms and tornadoes can destroy property, take down power lines, cause flooding, and take lives. Tornado season lasts from April until August, but tornadoes can strike at any time during the year. Keep a NOAA weather radio at home to alert you and your family to weather emergencies.
Flooding
In 2007 and 2008, floods ravaged Wisconsin. Floods are particularly common in the spring and early summer as the snow melts and showers begin. Floods can appear rapidly with little to no warning so it is important to pay attention to local media and evacuate as soon as possible. Check to see if your home is eligible for flood insurance.
Winter Storm
Wisconsin is famous for harsh winters with severe cold, bitter winds and lots of snow and ice. Winter storms pose a risk of cutting power which could force you and your family to evacuate. Without heat, it would be difficult to shelter in place for long. Even households with generators must seek help after several days. Keep a well stocked emergency supply kit and avoid travel during bad weather.
Hazardous Material Spill
Railroads, farms, and major interstates all increase the risk for a hazardous material spill. In most cases, these incidents require areas surrounding the spill to evacuate. Always follow instructions of emergency response personnel and evacuate immediately.
